Fatal Drownings have increased this year!
September 2, 2021
This Labor Day Weekend use extra caution around all bodies of water. Flash flooding has caused numerous drownings in the country. Remember, “to turn around, don’t drown” in high water areas such as arroyo’s, streets, ponding areas and drainage canals.
Since fatal drowning is the number one cause of injury-related death among children between the ages of 1 and 5 and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1-14, water safety should be a priority for parents, teachers and caregivers.”
In Texas, since January there have been 66 fatal drownings to children under age 18. Most have occurred in back yard pools and lakes. There has been an increase in adult drownings.
One of those was to a 3 year old girl that fatally drown in her backyard pool in El Paso. A 65 year old grandmother and 2 year old granddaughter died due to a home flood.
Lack of proper supervision contributes to many fatal drownings.
1.💥39 percent were doing chores. 2.🗣18 percent socializing. 3📲9 percent were busy on the phone.
