Drowning Prevention Coalition Water Safety Media Day
May 1, 2025
MAY IS NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH. Pools, Water Parks and Spray Pads are opening for the summer. Drowning is #1 killer of children ages 1-4. Around 4,000 individuals drown each year in the U.S. It takes a community working together to ”Respect the Water” to prevent fatal drownings.
The Drowning Prevention Coalition hosted a MEDIA NEWS CONFERENCE on May 1, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Westside Pool 650 Wallenberg. El Paso Water Rescue & City Lifeguards demonstrated water rescues. DPC Members, City & County Aquatics, Wet N Wild Waterworld, YWCA, YMCA, EP Water Parks, UMC Trauma, Del Sol Trauma, El Paso Water, Tx Parks & Wild Life, EP Fire & Water Rescue talked about importance of water safety/swim lessons.
Gus,Goldie & Freddie the Frog Mascots were there promoting Swim Lessons Save Lives. TV stations from KTSM, KVIA, KFOX, and Univision interviewed/videotaped segments for their news stations. Each organization provided media with swimming lesson info, What Parents Need To Know about Water Safety & Water Watcher info.
Thank you to media and DPC members for sharing valuable lifesaving information.
Make a plan to be safe around water. Always designate a “water watcher”, fence in home pools, use coast guard approved life vests, and enroll kids in swim lessons.
