Drowning Prevention Coalition Announces Winners of Lifeguard Olympics held at Wet N’ Wild Waterworld Anthony, TX, August 5, 2024 - In partnership with the Drowning Prevention Coalition of El Paso, Wet ‘N’ Wild Waterworld hosted the 13th Annual Christian Castle Lifeguard Olympics on Sunday, August 4, 2024. The competition is named after Christian Castle, who tragically lost his life due to drowning at only five years old in 2009. He was the son of Laura and Eddie Castle who together started the Coalition in 2010. This competitive event provides lifeguards from throughout the city an opportunity to practice life saving skills while highlighting the training and duties that lifeguards experience on a daily basis. Over 30 teams consisting of four members each from all around the city competed in various skill-based challenges such as a Mass Casualty exercise, Shallow Water Backboarding, Water Treading, Submerged Drill Rescue, Scanning Exercise and a Tow Relay Race. Awards were given for First through Third Place in each individual skill challenge and teams from Fort Bliss were awarded as overall champions. The Drowning Prevention Coalition is an organization of over 31 agencies including the El Paso Fire Department, City of El Paso Parks & Recreation, University Medical Center, the YWCA, Wet N’ Wild Waterworld, Fort Bliss Aquatics, El Paso Waterparks, El Paso County, El Paso Water, and more all dedicated to spreading the message of “Respect the Water” teaching water safety to both children and adults.
